Women’s Wrestling Claims SECWA Conference Championship, Sets Sights on State Title
The Victor Valley College women's wrestling program capped off an outstanding regular season by finishing 5–0 in dual competition and earning the SECWA Conference Championship, marking another major milestone for a rapidly rising program.
The Rams opened the season at home with a tri-dual against Bakersfield College and Moorpark College, setting the tone early with decisive victories. Victor Valley defeated Bakersfield College 40–15 before edging Moorpark College 31–23, showcasing depth and competitiveness across the lineup.
Momentum continued in the next tri-dual as the Rams traveled to face Lemoore College and Cuesta College. Victor Valley delivered two dominant performances, defeating both Lemoore and Cuesta by identical 35–15 scores.
The regular season concluded back at home with a strong showing against East Los Angeles College. The Rams closed out dual competition with a 33–16 victory over ELAC, completing an undefeated 5–0 conference dual season and securing the SECWA Conference Championship.
More Than Wins and Losses
While the team's success is often measured by dual victories, the program's foundation extends far beyond the scoreboard.
"Our success is often defined by the dual wins, but I always preach education, accountability, discipline, and character," said the VVC coaching staff. "We focus on what we can control as a team and as individuals."
Despite not fielding a complete lineup throughout the season — missing competitors in several lower weight classes and at heavyweight — the Rams consistently made key adjustments and found ways to win critical matches. The team's balance and resilience across the lineup played a major role in securing the conference title.
Conference success came early, but the belief within the program has remained strong.
"I have no doubt our team can accomplish something special this season," the coaching staff added.
Gratitude, Growth, and the VVC Mission
The season has also been a reflection of the program's broader mission — developing student‑athletes both on and off the mat.
"I am thankful and grateful for all the student‑athletes who participated and believed in our program," the staff shared. "Thank you to our families, supporters, and KHAD administration who believe in what we are building."
With a strong pool of wrestling talent in the High Desert, the program continues to focus on recruiting locally while emphasizing academic success.
"Our job as coaches is to get these athletes to attend VVC and help them earn their AA or AS degree. That has always been the goal — and to have fun in practice and competition."
Individual Highlights and Leadership
The season also featured notable individual accomplishments, highlighted by Ashley Orozco's victory at the ELAC Open, a significant achievement as the Rams continue to build toward postseason success.
Team captain Makayla Anderson reflected on the journey and what the season has meant to the program:
"This season has been a dream. Winning the conference in our second year as an established team was truly something special. We faced a lot of challenges early on, struggling to build our team to what it needed to be. In the end, we created a group of hardworking, dedicated young women who come to practice every day hungry to learn and get better."
She continued, "Wrestling in college is a unique opportunity, and being able to say I wrestled alongside these incredible people with such an amazing coaching staff is something I will cherish for the rest of my life."
Orozco echoed that sentiment, emphasizing both personal growth and team success:
"I have no regrets about choosing to wrestle at VVC. The coaches don't just see me as an athlete — they care about my goals as a whole. My teammates have supported me every step of the way. Winning the ELAC Open was a big accomplishment, but it's not my end goal. I know I have to keep working if I want to become an All-American."
Looking Ahead
With a conference championship secured and confidence continuing to grow, the Rams now turn their attention toward the postseason.
The best is yet to come.
