Women's Basketball Dominates Chaffey
**Victor Valley College Rams Secure Dominating Win Over Chaffey College**
On a crisp Saturday afternoon, the Victor Valley College Rams women's basketball team showcased their prowess with an emphatic victory over Chaffey College, taking the game 62-50. This win further cements the Rams' standing as a formidable force in the Inland Empire Athletic Conference (IEAC), where they currently hold a strong second place. With the playoffs in sight, Victor Valley is making a compelling case for a top seed.
From the first whistle, the Rams established their dominance. The opening quarter ended with Victor Valley leading 22-14, setting the tone for the rest of the match. A robust defensive strategy and efficient scoring saw the Rams extend their lead to 33-21 by halftime. While both teams matched each other with 12 points apiece in the third quarter, Victor Valley ensured no chance of a comeback by closing the game with a final quarter burst, adding 17 points to Chaffey's 17.
Key performances came from across the roster. Kayleen Vasquez was a standout, contributing 15 points and securing 7 rebounds. Her aggressive play and consistency in hitting crucial shots kept the Rams ahead. Karoline Ellison also shone with 10 points, showcasing her free-throw prowess with a flawless 6-for-6 performance from the line.
Myla Gibson proved to be a powerhouse on the boards, grabbing 9 rebounds, of which 8 were offensive, significantly contributing to Victor Valley's 47 total rebounds. Belinda Rincon added valuable depth from the bench, scoring 7 points and aiding the Rams' defensive efforts with 4 rebounds.
The Rams' ability to capitalize on Chaffey's shooting woes—holding them to a meager 23% field goal percentage—was pivotal. Victor Valley's defensive strategy forced Chaffey into rushed shots and turnovers, amassing 12 steals and 4 blocks, a testament to their defensive tenacity.
Victor Valley's shooting accuracy, while not flawless, was efficient where it mattered. The Rams hit 78.9% of their free throws, a critical component in maintaining their lead.
With this victory, Victor Valley improves their overall record to 20-5, and 11-2 in the conference, keeping them firmly in the hunt for a prime playoff spot. The team's focus now shifts to their upcoming clash against Copper Mountain, set for Wednesday, February 12th, at 5:00 PM. The Rams will look to carry forward their momentum and tighten their grip on the IEAC standings, as they make their final push towards the postseason.
