Rams dominant in home opener
Lara notches first career collegiate win
VICTORVILLE - The Victor Valley men's soccer team opened the home portion of the season with an impressive 3-1 win over Imperial Valley on Friday.
The win gave first-year coach Sammy Lara his first collegiate coaching win.
"We held possession most of the game," said Lara. "We played a very strong game and were under control the entire game."
Lara was pleased with the effort of his team. The Rams weathered a strong wind and put a lot of pressure on Imperial Valley.
"The second half they played better," he said. "We were able to play our style and controlled the ball."
Victor Valley opened the scoring when Erik Gonzales scored an unassisted goal. Luis Roque scored the Rams second goal on a corner kick with Josue Castillo just a minute later. The Rams pushed the score to 3-0 in the second half when Jason Arevalo hit the back of the net on an assist from Gonzales. Imperial Valley scored a late goal, but the outcome was never in question.
Damian Navas had four saves in the game.
The Rams will be back in action on Wednesday against West Hills Lemoore.
